Motown Smokin' XMASFEST
by Darren Proctor

December 12th, 1998

What a good time! Fifteen guys met at JR Discount in Southfield, Michigan at 3:30 and proceeded to run rampant through the store like locusts in a wheat field. Various boxes, bundles, singles, etc., were purchased here. It was like watching kids in a candy store! From JR's, we headed out to the Big Rock Chop and Brew House in Birmingham, MI. When I got there, several of the guys were already downing micro-brewed beers at the bar and were ready to begin the herf! We were led downstairs to a long narrow room, with a very long table. It was almost medieval. I was looking for a turkey drumstick and a king's crown. What a cool room. The fifteen of us sat down and one by one, the cigars were fired up. There were cigars from every producing nation on the planet and these bad boys were giving their lives for our enjoyment! Everyone passed around boxes, bundles and bags and encouraged each other to help himself. It's definitely true, cigar smokers are a sharing bunch of people. After dinner of incredible choices, we went upstairs to the cigar lounge, "Got Rocks." More micro-brewed beers, single malt scotches and of course, more cigars were sacrificed. Steve St. Laurent was the winner of the "Rudy Ashtray," and Craig Frasa won the "Rudy Blazer Holder." Rudy does a fantastic job on these ashtrays. I highly encourage anyone interested to get in touch with him or check out his website.

Other prizes were handed out, which included: bags of cigars, a box of cigars that everyone contributed something to, and a cigar punch. All in all, it was a great night. it is absolutely amazing how cigars can bring a group of people together from any geographic area, any income level, or any walk of life. A big thanks to Dennis Haas, who arranged for our stay at The Big Rock. Dennis (Mr. Zoot Suit) was his usual giving self and passed out numerous cigars. I, for one, will be enjoying the Padron Anniversario Pyramid maduro very soon! Check out the pictures of our herfing event below and check back on the Event Calendar and my main cigar page for updates on the next Detroit area event! And last but not least, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All!
