SS: Dick Pewthers and Guy Thomas here as our host here at the Herf on the Lake and first off let me say congratulations! A splendid time I think was had by all. You guys did a great job, you guys were pretty excited.
DP: Thank you Steve, yeah we were excited. We had 97 people, we think that's probably the largest gathering of ASCers for anything like this in the history that represents 7 different states all the way from Maine, California, Florida, Texas of course, Oklahoma, Kansas, Chicago, New Hampshire.
SS: That's right, don't forget New Hampshire. New Hampshire's important.
DP: Vermont. So we had a large crowd of people and a hell of a good time.
GT: We did and I gotta say that every single person who came to Texas BECAME a Texan that day because the hospitality was incredible! Everyone just went above board. I'm sitting here with two shirts full of cigars. My pockets are stuffed... THANK YOU ASC!
SS: Guy pulls off the mega-mooch. Let me tell you, you guys got thrown a few curve balls here didn't you. Things didn't quite go the way you thought. What were some of the biggest problems you ran into?
DP: Probably the weather was the biggest problem Steve, lucked out. When I came up here we were going to do it outside in the sunshine. We picked this date way back in January. We picked it because normally this time of year it's always sunny and bright. Then it started raining about three days ago and has not let up until the herf as a matter of fact. Now it's been cloudy all day but we've had no rain, nice and cool, so the weather kinda came around on our side.
GT: I'm still waiting for 8:00 o'clock. It's only 6:00 o'clock here in Texas and before 8:00 o'clock there will be one ray of sunshine on the lake.
SS: So we're holding out for a sunny sunset is that the deal here?
GT: It's gonna happen.
DP: That's correct and Patty was on her way up, Patty the beer wench was on her way up to this thing and she decided to change the name from Herf on the Lake to Herf in the Lake.
SS: Well this is a good group of people. I mean everybody had a great time and I'll be honest with you, I think I had a little too much to drink. I think you guys are a little too free on that!
DP: Well we have to thank Gary Heiney from Bradlees Beer, Brewery & Restaurant in Clearlake. They provided the beer for us tonight and it was three different kinds of micro brew that Gary brewed especially for us and it was very good stuff.
GT: Absolutely good stuff and if you can hear this, here's a sip....(slurp). That's what it tastes like. Now it's hard to...
DP: Yum, yum.
GT: It's good stuff and each and every person contributed cigars to Gary Heiney for, I mean the guy has like a bucket of cigars up there now for providing this brew for our tasting and evaluation.
DP: One of the things I want to comment on here if I may. We did a special drawing for an extra-special humidor and in order to get your ticket you had to drop in two cigars to buy your ticket and just about everyone bought a ticket with two cigars. The two cigars they dropped in there were no dog rockets here. We're talkin' Cohibas, we're talkin' about some really good smokes. We're talkin' about Opus, there were some Hemingways, there were some Cigars that I have only dreamed about in my lifetime.
SS: A Ramon Allones Gigantes.
DP: Steve was in the drawing. He's just mad that he didn't win.
SS: Now wait a minute, I won this beautiful ten inch Santa Rosa that I'm just going to just enjoy for the rest of my life. So lets talk about the next event. You called it the First Annual Herf on the Lake which implies that there's going to be a Second Annual one?
DP: Yes we've already started making plans for next year. Derrick Miski owns a Longavista Resort and Derrick is just going crazy over this thing. He's had so much fun putting it on and he says next year we're going to incorporate golf, tennis, a boat show, the whole nine yards. It's going to get much bigger than this one even.
GT: Yeah next year I'm already predicting and since I'm Senior Marketing Executive Espresso Supremo, I am guessing between 300 and 500 people will be attending THOTL2 the sequel with no equal.
SS: There you go! That's the goal. 500 ASCers in Austin, Texas!
